Zombicide... the closest I've come to a feeling of a horde attack...
Then there are the city board tiles... and the flat cardboard rubble... hmm... design challenge.
How to make the same size obstacle without it becoming too bulky. A piece of plastic cut to the same size and shape... some styrofoam and sand... a really cheap plastic airplane built then snapped apart... some EVA glue and bit of ink... is this where toxic zombies come from? Or could it be an objective to collect water from? Boil it before drinking though. Click on pics for closer look...

Let's see... there are smaller flat cardboard junk piles... and there are leftover plane parts... even some plastic sprues from the model kit... more rubble!

With all this rubble we're going to need something to clean it up with... a bulldozer? 3D that a figure can ride in.
Click on pics... in the overhead view we see the bulldozer in the center of the board, to the left of the rubble. There is a huge zombie hoard about to come into the city. They'll show up on the purple-yellow-red-blue spawn point cluster in the upper right. To stop them the rubble pile has to be pushed to the green X. Only you can't push a ruble pile around a corner. After getting it this far the bulldozer has to turn around and move around the block, such as over the blue X, then the white X, then the yellow X and finally move straight up the street to push the rubble to the green X.

Zombicide comes with flat cardboard cars. Good for zipping around the city. The design challenge here was to come up with 3D cars that the figures can ride in. Click on pics...
And now that our Zombicide heroes have respectable cars to cruise around in... what about motorcycles?
A bit of modeling and some 3D printing... viola!

If anyone would like to give a go with the STL of the motorcycle... here it is....

And what about a helicopter? Season 3 of Zombicide [ Rue Morgue ] has a nice helicopter. It though, like many other pieces, is flat. It can fly, it has a stand. But it's a bit crash prone.
So for this design challenge, a helicopter that fits within the footprint of the cardboard piece, and can hold passengers, is the target. And this is what it looks like. Click on pics...
And then came the ship. This is a prop that is used off the board, in the water. It's a plastic model modified to fit with the game. The full hull was cut to the waterline. A basic interior put together. The model hull stand was chopped up and etched to resemble a wooden gang plank.
The ship can serve all sorts of purposes. An exit point. A supply ship to loot. Perhaps it's a Coast Guard ship that can't move, but has a limited amount of ammo for some high powered deck guns. Or it can move and can be used to open up another section of the board with those same guns.

Barricades were a detail added in the third season.... here they are, being put together by a group of survivors prepping for a horde to come through....
